This unique programme by Prima Choral Artists, under the artistic direction of Eve Lorian, offers an exploration of global traditional vocal practices, examining the relationship between musical language, cultural identity and vocal technique.
Spanning a wide geographical and cultural spectrum, the repertoire highlights distinctive approaches to tone production, ornamentation, rhythm and ensemble cohesion. The programme opens with Sakura, a Japanese folk melody characterised by its pentatonic modality and restrained, lyrical phrasing, evoking both seasonality and transience. In contrast, the Bulgarian works Kaval Sviri and Dolmano Dilbero exemplify the highly resonant, open-throated 'white voice' technique, notable for its penetrating timbre, complex harmonies and asymmetrical rhythmic structures. This vocal aesthetic continues in Ajde Jano (Serbia), where dance-derived rhythms and communal expression are central.
